Why does my website need a domain name?
A domain name is simply the address that directs visitors to your website. Without one, it would be very difficult for anyone to find your website.
Some web hosting providers will allocate you a domain name that is of the form "yourwebsite.theirwebsite.com" (or .co.uk etc). This is confusing for your visitors and doesn't quite give the same impression as "yourwebsite.com". You should choose your domain name carefully; it should be something that is easy for your visitors to remember and easily associated with your business (not necessarily your business name unless this is also short and snappy!) … and don't forget that the domain name you choose may already have been taken.
How do I register a domain name?
You can register domain names through Box Design. Please note that domain names are leased not purchased outright; this is the same no matter which provider you go to. Leasing is for a minimum period of one year, up to a maximum of ten.
Some web agencies will tell you that there is a release fee or fees to transfer domain names etc; but these services should all come as standard and free of charge. When you purchase a domain name through a web agency you should check that they register the domain name in your name, not theirs. This is important because the name in which it is registered is the legal entity that has ownership of that domain.
